January is National Mentoring Month, a time to celebrate the transformative power of mentorship. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County, we believe every young person deserves guidance, support, and encouragement to help them reach their full potential.
The Impact
Mentorship makes a significant difference. Youth with mentors are 55% more likely to enroll in college, 46% less likely to use illicit drugs, and 27% less likely to start drinking. Our mentors help kids build stronger relationships, improve self-esteem, and develop resilience in the face of challenges.
We believe mentorship is more than just a program— it’s a way of life. Our staff, volunteers, and community partners work together to create a supportive environment where every child feels valued and empowered.
How We Make Mentoring a Priority
Building Meaningful Relationships: Our dedicated staff engage personally with each child, offering academic support, emotional encouragement and a consistent, positive presence.
Providing Safe, Supportive Spaces: Our Clubs are a second home for many of our members, where they can explore their passions, try new activities, and connect with peers in a safe, judgement-free environment.
Offering Opportunities for Growth: Through programs in academics, leadership, arts, sports, and health, we help youth develop life skills and pursue their dreams.
Partnering with the Community: We collaborate with local leaders, businesses, and organizations to connect youth with role models and opportunities for college prep and career exploration.
The impact of mentorship is clear in the stories of those we serve. Take Cameron, a Litigation Assistant with Morgan & Morgan, a Florida State University graduate, and a Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County alum. Cameron says:
“Without Boys & Girls Clubs, my life would look completely different. The Club provided me with the support and guidance I needed to succeed. It wasn’t just a place to spend time after school; it became my safe space, my launchpad for a better future. The most impactful part of my experience was meeting Mr. John, who became more than a mentor; he became a father figure. Through his encouragement, I stayed on track academically and discovered my passion for leadership. His belief in me gave me the confidence to graduate college and pursue my dream of attending law school. The Club showed me that all it takes is one safe place, one moment of kindness, and one mentor to make all the difference. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the Boys & Girls Club, and I’ll always be grateful for the role it played in my life.”
This month— and every month— we invite you to celebrate the power of mentorship with us. Whether by volunteering, donating, or spreading the word, you can help create lasting change in the lives of Polk County youth. Together, we can ensure every child has the support they need to dream big and achieve even bigger.
Because every great future starts with a great mentor.
