Here at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County, we know how important it is to give back to the community. It is the very reason we are able to help thousands of at-risk youth each year. Every volunteer or donation to our Organization makes our mission possible. What better way to teach our members the importance of community, than Volunteering?

VISTE stands for Volunteers in Service to the Elderly. This is a community-based, volunteer-driven nonprofit organization serving at-risk seniors in the greater Lakeland area. Established in 1983, VISTE’s mission is to enable elderly persons to remain safe and independent in their own homes. The organization is celebrating its 40th year of providing essential care in the Lakeland Community.

Club members from our James J. Musso Unit had the opportunity to Volunteer at VISTE’s annual Bean Snap Event! 18 Club kids piled up in the van and headed over to First Presbyterian Church. They helped a group of volunteers snap beans all afternoon, reflecting on how their own grandparents need help sometimes too. Jovanni, a Polk County 5th grader, shared with his peers that it is hard for his grandparents to go grocery shopping, so he & his mom bring them a warm dinner a few times a week. He was so proud that he was able to help other grandparents too!

Volunteering at VISTE curated curiosity at the James J. Musso Club, opening doors to conversations about helping others. Members sparked interest in events like the Annual Bean Snap, wanting to know where else they could volunteer. Some thought about people in their life they could offer to help, like friends, family, and neighbors. Our students enjoyed the opportunity to step outside the club and lend a helping hand. BGC Polk Club Members and other Volunteers in the Community snapped 34 cases of Beans, weighing in at over 500 pounds!

VISTE, Thank you for inviting us to participate in your event! Together, Polk County Non-Profit Organizations can ensure equal opportunities for those who are most vulnerable.
